PROFESSOR:
Kevin Cochrane – was a visiting professor at UIR last summer. For the past ten
years he has been a professor of economics at College of the Desert (Los
Angeles, U.S.A.). Previously he was a professor in the Graduate School of
Management at the University of California/Davis for three years. He retired as
the Executive Vice President of one of the largest banks in America and is a
member of the American Economics Association and the Economic History
Association.

- COURSE DESCRIPTION

This class is designed to familiarize students with American
university life and
U.S. culture. While many things are the same between
China and the U.S., there are also many differences. The focus of this short
class will be to identify the differences in culture and daily life so that
students planning to study in the U.S. will be prepared to easily integrate into
American life.
We will cover many areas of daily life, including how
U.S. universities operate and what is expected of students, healthcare in the
U.S., food and dining out, financial matters, the political system,
transportation, and even American family structure. There is no textbook for
this class, but handouts will be provided and many pictures will be shown in
class.
This class is about PARTICIPATION! You are
expected to speak in this class, ask questions and share your thoughts and
ideas. A large portion of your grade in this class will be based on your
classroom participation.
